Welcome to 7th grade English language arts! I base my English language arts class upon the following idea from iconic educator Paulo Freire: When you read the word, you read the world. Therefore, in my class you will gain skills to grow as close readers (readers of the word) and critical thinkers (readers of the world). You will read, discuss, and write about texts from a variety of genres over the course of the year including short stories, dystopian novels, nonfiction books and articles, historical fiction, and argumentative essays. If you apply yourself every day in English language arts, then you have the opportunity for tremendous growth in both academics and empathy.

Current Unit: Comparing Author's Choices

In this unit, students compare and contrast a written speech to a performed one. Students will also write and perform their own speeches that use the rhetorical appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos.
