Field trip gives newcomers new experiences

Field trip gives newcomers new experiences

Our newcomers from Thornton Middle school received a grant from the Adams 12 Education Foundation to engage in an authentic field trip to Safeway and Starbucks. Newcomer students in grades 6-8 studied recipes and walked to Safeway to shop for the ingredients. They stopped and ordered a drink at Starbucks after practicing how to order in English.

The next day the students used our school kitchen to make their recipes. Eighth grade made chicken salad, 7th grade baked chocolate chip cookies from scratch and 6th grade made a yummy apple crisp. Students used their English skills to create a shopping list, shop for the right foods and order their drinks. They had a great time.

This story exemplifies our ELEVATE Focus Area: Outside-the-Classroom Learning. Sharing stories about how the district offers students multiple learning opportunities outside the traditional classroom providing various pathways to success.
