Important Back To School Information

Important Back To School Information

Dear Thornton Middle School Students, Parents, and Guardians:

We’re excited to welcome you back for the 2025-2026 school year. This message contains important information for you to reference as you prepare to return to school, the first day of school and beyond. Always check our school website and/or our facebook page for any information you might need.

Online Check In:
All new and returning families need to complete Online Check In from July 14th-August 7th. The district will send more information about this.  Your student will not have early access to their schedule unless a guardian within the primary household completes this important process.

Back-to-School Night Open House Thursday August 7th 4:30pm - 7:00pm:
This will be an open-house format, so feel free to come when convenient for your family. You’ll have the opportunity to walk around the school, access lockers, drop off school supplies, meet teachers, catch up with friends, and pick up information for the upcoming school year. This event is open to all students and their families.

This link will take you to our supply list.

Schedules:
If you have received approval on your Online Check In application, student schedules will be available to view and print through the Infinite Campus (IC) Portal on Friday, August 1st.  (Prior to the first day of school, you will have to access the schedule as follows: LOGIN TO IC PARENT PORTAL > Click MORE > Click ADAMS 12 TOOLS > Click IC STUDENT SCHEDULE)

*note that all schedules are subject to change due to enrollment prior to the first day of school

As you review your student’s schedule, you may notice a couple of courses that spark questions. We’d like to take a moment to provide some helpful information.

Personal Development Class

All students will be enrolled in a class titled “Personal Development.” This is a homeroom-style course where students will build classroom community and strengthen their executive functioning skills. You may be wondering, What is executive functioning?

In simple terms, executive functioning skills help students:

  • Stay organized

  • Manage their time

  • Set goals and follow through with them

  • Stay focused and complete tasks

  • Work through challenges in healthy, productive ways

Think of executive functioning as the “how” behind getting things done — and it’s something we all continue to develop throughout our lives. This class is designed to give students tools that will help them succeed both in school and beyond.

7th Grade Computer Science/Creative Computing 7

Another class you may see on your student’s schedule is “7th Grade Computer Science/Creative Computing 7.” While the title includes “7,” this class is appropriate for both 7th and 8th grade students. The number in the course title does not indicate the grade level of the student. Whether your child is in 7th or 8th grade, this class will challenge them to think creatively, solve problems, and explore the world of computer science.

First Day of School:

  • 6th graders: Monday, August 11th 8:40-11:50am (buses will be running)

  • 7th graders: Tuesday, August 12th 8:40-3:50pm

  • 8th graders: Tuesday, August 12th 8:40-3:50pm

*All students in grades 6-8 will begin attending on August 12th. Students should bring everything they need for classes, including Chromebooks, as we will begin learning right away.

Middle School Sports:
Registration for grades 6/7/8 coed cross country and grades 7/8 girls soccer will be starting right away in the fall so please make sure you have an updated sports physical for your student.

Other Important Information:

  • School Pictures: September 3rd and retakes on October 22nd

  • Bell Schedule: Doors open at 8:30 a.m., and students are dismissed at 3:50 p.m. Please make sure your student is on time every day!

  • Supply Lists & Chromebooks: Students should bring their charged district issued device and charger every day.  Students new to the district will receive a Chromebook. This link will take you to our supply list.

  • Dress Code Highlights: Hats are permitted, but students cannot wear hoodies with the hood up.  This link will take you to the district wide Dress code policy.

  • IDs:  Students will be issued an ID that will also be used as their bus pass if they qualify for transportation.  We ask that students have their ID on them every day.

  • Cell phones: are not allowed in classrooms, hallways, bathrooms, or locker rooms and must be stored silenced and out of sight (preferably in a locker). Cell phones may only be used before and after school (not during lunch). Students can use a school phone to make emergency calls. Parents/guardians needing to contact their student during the school day should NOT text them and instead call the office to have a message delivered.
This link will take you to the updated District Wide Policy concerning student use of cell phones.

  • Lockers & Backpacks: Students will be issued a hallway locker with a built-in lock. Backpacks are not allowed in classrooms or the lunchroom.

  • Grading: All Adams 12 middle schools are continuing A-F grading this year.

  • Meals: Free breakfast and lunch are available daily. It is important for families who qualify to apply for Free and Reduced Benefits to make sure that additional benefits can be accessed (here is the link).

We are entering this school year with excitement and purpose. Our team is committed to making this year full of meaningful learning, strong relationships, and joyful experiences. Thank you for being our partners in supporting your child’s success.

Here’s to a fantastic year ahead!
